Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons by Ann Rinaldi – 4 Star Review!

images.jpgStory Rating: ****
Cover Rating: A

A beautiful story about a young girl kidnapped from Senegal and sold into slavery, who learns how to read and write, despite this not being allowed. She goes on to publish her book of poetry, becoming the first African American woman to do so. The story is heart-breaking, descriptive, and uplifting all at once. The main character shows strength, determination, and character flaws that make her personality come to life on the pages. I highly recommend this book for middle-school student and up, as a way to get incite into this era of history – and see a point of view drastically different from theirs.

The cover is eye-catching and offers a good idea of what readers should expect to find within the story itself.
