I’m going to be totally honest and state this is the first volume in my absolute favorite fantasy series. I have read this series at least a dozen times, and it never grows old. Eddings has created a cast of extraordinary characters who have literally become some of my very best friends.
Polgara, of course, is one of my favorites. She’s a kick-butt woman who can take care of herself while still maintaining a feminine side that men (like Dirk) can’t help but love. Belgareth? Grumpy old dude with a heart of gold. And Silk? He was my very first book boyfriend – seriously, in love with him and would pull him right out of the pages if I could. Garion is a likable main character that is so realistic I feel that I could hang out with him for a while and have no idea there was anything special about him.
This first volume in The Belgariad series lays a lot of foundation work between the big action scenes. It also does a lot of character building, which is something I love in my fantasy series.
The cover is good, gives an accurate description, and moderately draws the eye’s attention. (Note: the cover I have/am grading is the mass market paperback cover. There are numerous covers and formats available for this book.)
